Вторая история Бхараты конкани начинается с того, что Бхишма, отчаявшийся найти отцу жену среди принцесс, решил найти хоть какую-нибудь, и поехал со своей свитой на поиски. На берегу реки он встретил девушку, от которой очень хорошо пахло. Ее звали Сугандха.
В санскритской Махабхарате, где Бхишма не искал отцу жену, девушку с прекрасным запахом случайно встретил на берегу реки сам Шантану и влюбился в нее. В критическом издании Махабхараты это 94-я глава первой книги, шлоки 41-46.
One day, going into the woods along the Yamuna River, the lord of the earth caught an exquisite fragrance he had never smelled before.
He wandered in all directions, searching for its source. Then he saw a girl of the fisherfolk who was as beautiful as a goddess.
As soon as he saw that black-eyed girl, he asked her, “Whose are you and who are you? And what do you wish to do, O timid one?”
She said, “I am a fishergirl — may you be blessed. My father, the high-souled chief of the fisherfolk, charged me with the duty of plying a boat.”
Having seen that fishergirl of divine form, endowed with beauty, charm, and fragrance, King Shantanu fell in love with her.
Then he went to her father and asked him to give her in marriage. At that time, it was he himself who spoke to her father on his own behalf.

В Махабхарате Вьясы девушку звали Сатьявати. Также в тексте упоминаются и другие ее имена, но вот именно такого, как у конкани, - Сугандха - среди них нет.
